David Rocker's retirement won't end Overstock fight

David Rocker, who started the short-biased hedge fund firm Rocker Partners 21 years ago, has announced he will retire as of January 2, 2007.

In a personal letter sent to limited partners on Tuesday night, Rocker said he would continue to pursue "issues which are meaningful to me, including the rising threat to free expression in the investment business. I believe I can be more effective in this particular matter by being an independent outsider than as an insider with a perceived axe to grind."

That comment appears to be directed to the suit against Rocker by Overstock.com, as sources close to Rocker say that he believes Overstock Chief Executive Patrick Byrne is spearheading the efforts to chill independent analysis on Wall...
