Farallon heads the heavyweight pack

Assets run by the top 176 U.S. funds reach $645 billion

The giants of the hedge fund industry continue to dominate the rankings in our biannual survey of U.S. managers that run over $1 billion in assets. Once again, Farallon has captured top place with $12.5 billion under management, but volatility player Bridgewater Associates is snapping hard at San Francisco-based Farallon's heels with assets of $12.4 billion. Having grown from $8.1 billion at the start of the year, Bridgewater has pushed Citadel Investment Group out of the second place it held in our last survey.

Perry Capital also enjoyed an extraordinary year with its event-driven strategy, entering the top 10 with assets leaping from $6.2 billion at the start of 2004 to $10.3 billion, along with such heavyweights as D. E. Shaw and Och-Ziff, whose assets soared by 73% and 44%, respectively. Goldman Sachs also...
