Phalanx squeezes out volatility to win big in convertible bonds

Phalanx Capital Management founder Chris McGuire and his team are taking a cautious stance on leverage and their portfolio in order to minimise risk and avoid following the herd

For Chris McGuire, founder of Phalanx Capital Management and portfolio manager of its Asian Volatility Multi-Strategy fund, the nosedive that the markets took in 2008 was not a source of horror - rather, steeply falling prices were just more grist to the mill. The Japan/Australasia-focused fund gained 44.54% last year, since when it gained 3.51% in January and 4.94% in February, with returns estimated flat for March. Since inception in April 2005, the fund has clocked up returns of 694%.

McGuire credits his rounded background before he founded Phalanx in 2004 with giving him the right blend of skills to run a hedge fund successfully. His portfolio management experience is combined with a nose for what the competition...
