Big gains last year allowed many U.S. hedge funds to produce profits after a disastrous 2008. But 2010 has proven more difficult, with many funds hit hard in the spring and the AR composite return for hedge funds now languishing in the low single digits through late August. Yet early contenders for the 2010 AR Awards indicate the best funds have been able to buck that trend and deliver excellent returns to investors. To honor those best-of-breed managers, AR will present its sixth annual awards during a black-tie dinner on November 18 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York City.

Only two of the funds so far in the running this year—King Street Capital and Pine River’s Nisswa Fixed Income—were winners in 2009. But at least another 12 of this year’s early contenders were also nominees last year, including York Credit Opportunities, M Kingdon Overseas, Maverick, Graham Global Investment and previous long-term performance winner Millennium International. Other noteworthy names on the short list so far include Third Point Offshore, Bridgewater Pure Alpha, Brevan Howard Credit Catalysts, Omega Overseas and Pershing Square.

With one month of performance left to count, there is still time for new contenders to emerge. The provisional list is based on the past 11 months’ results, and the final nominees will be determined for the 12 months ending September 30. In November, AR will release the names of the final contenders as well as the nominees for New Fund of the Year. The Fund of the Year candidates will be announced at the awards ceremony.

The AR Awards are decided by a purely quantitative methodology. Nominees must meet the criteria for a minimum level of assets under management, beat the median return in their relevant peer group and generate best-in-class Sharpe ratios. Like last year, funds must also be within 10% of their high-water mark.

Last year’s winners included such heavyweights as SAC Capital, Paulson & Co. and King Street Capital. More than 300 industry leaders attended this event in each of the past five years, with many top firms such as Moore Capital, Caxton, D.E Shaw and Eton Park Capital Management taking tables.
