Sire Discovery Group finally shows up on the radar

With its roots in high-net-worth investing and an average performance of 11% a year, Sire has quietly been taking the industry by storm – and is now emerging as a strong player

For nearly two decades Sire Management Corporation has been quietly investing in long/short equity hedge funds on behalf of its partners and a small coterie of clients. During this time, Sire’s net performance – 11% a year on average with 8% volatility – has gone largely unnoticed in the industry. Sire has no marketer, did not appear on any databases, and is just now developing a website. "We’ve always been under the radar," says Donna Walker, partner.

Based in New York, Sire runs about $500 million in four funds plus a tiny short-biased fund, Sire SB that soared more than 80% over 2007 and 2008. Sire Discovery Group, with $100 million in assets, won the InvestHedge Award for best emerging manager fund of funds in 2010. The fund has gained an...
