Nassim Taleb, author of the bestselling book “The Black Swan”; Mitch Julis, co-founder of Canyon Capital Advisors; and Emmanuel “Manny” Roman, chief operating officer of Man Group, will offer the keynote addresses at the eighth annual AR Symposium, being held in New York on Wednesday and Thursday, November 2 and 3 at the New York Athletic Club. The speakers will address the pressing issues faced by investors today as economic uncertainty continues.
One of the country’s foremost commentators on risk, Taleb is the distinguished scientific adviser for Universa Investments, an investment management firm in Santa Monica, Calif., and is considered the premier specialist of rare events—so-called black swans. Taleb has advised heads of states, top financial institutions and various central banks on tail risks. Taleb has held senior trading and managing director positions at investment banks and is a distinguished professor of risk engineering at New York University Polytechnic Institute.
Julis is co-founder, co-chairman and co-CEO of Canyon, the $19.2 billion Los Angeles multistrategy fund he launched in 1990 with longtime friend and colleague Josh Friedman. Since then, the two have built Canyon into the 13th-largest hedge fund firm in the U.S., a multistrategy fund with a focus on distressed assets. Julis is an alumnus of Drexel Burnham Lambert, where he worked alongside junk bond kingpin Michael Milken.
Roman was co-CEO of GLG Partners, which was acquired in 2010 by Man, the London alternatives firm that manages $69.1 billion in hedge funds and funds of funds. In May, he joined the board of directors of the company, where his primary responsibility is integrating the GLG acquisition. At GLG he focused on expanding the business, marketing, risk management, operations, technology and compliance. Before that, Roman spent 18 years at Goldman Sachs, where he was a partner and held various positions.
The two-day AR Symposium will feature prominent hedge fund managers, opening with a “view from the top” panel composed of hedge fund founders, who will discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the industry. Strategy sessions will explore the future of macro investing, emerging markets, credit and managed futures. On the second day of the event, six managers will take 15 minutes each to present their best ideas in equities, credit and other strategies, articulating their trades in great detail. This increasingly popular format will also give the audience an inside view of the thinking behind bets they may not have considered and allow them to question managers directly about the analysis that underpins their trades.
As in previous years, there will be networking opportunities during coffee breaks, lunch and cocktails.
