Veteran equity manager expands base with SW Mitchell boutique
July 22, 2011
Ex-JO Hambro man Stuart Mitchell and his team have been investing in European equities for more than two decades. Expansion into UCITS and the hiring of a short-side analyst are the latest moves to grow the business, with emerging market and UK funds next on the list
The launch in June of the first UCITS-compliant fund by SW Mitchell Capital, the London-based independent equities boutique led by Stuart Mitchell, marks a new step in the development of one of the European hedge fund industry’s longest-associated operations.
Although SW Mitchell is only six years old as an independent entity, Mitchell has been managing long/short European equity money since the early days of the industry back in the late 1990s – initially for several years at JO Hambro Investment Management, before spinning out to found his own boutique in 2005.
The long-running Charlemagne Fund – which Mitchell ran for many years at JOHIM before taking the fund with him to his standalone firm – has a 13-year track record, generating an annualised return of almost 10% through one of the most violent equity market cycles ever seen and over a period when European equity indices have been flat.
