The Black Swan author Nassim Taleb, who predicted the financial crisis of 2008, will deliver a keynote address at the eighth annual AR Symposium, being held in New York on November 2 and 3 at the New York Athletic Club.
Taleb is the Distinguished Scientific Advisor for Universa Investments, a firm that offers tail risk protectionand is considered the premier expert on unforseeable rare events, so-called black swans. Taleb has advised heads of states, top financial institutions and various central banks on tail risks. Black Swan has been called one of the most important books published since World War II. Talebs books, which also include Fooled by Randomness and The Bed of Procrustes: Philosophical & Practical Aphorisms, have been translated into over 32 languages.
Taleb has held senior trading and managing director positions at investment banks and is a Distinguished Professor of Risk Engineering at New York University Polytechnic Institute.
Taleb joins a distinguished lineup of speakers who will address the pressing issues faced by investors today as economic uncertainty continues.
Emmanuel Manny Roman, chief operating officer of Man Group, the London alternatives firm that manages $71 billion in assets, and Mitch Julis, co-founder of the $17.5 billion Los Angeles multistrategy fund Canyon Capital, will also keynote the event.
Roman was co-CEO of GLG Partners, which was acquired by Man in 2010. In May, he joined the board of directors of the company, where his primary responsibility is integrating the GLG acquisition.
Julis is co-founder, co-chairman and co-CEO of Canyon Capital Advisors, which he launched in 1990 with former Drexel Burnham Lambert colleague Josh Friedman. The two have built Canyon into the 13th-largest hedge fund firm in the U.S., focused on distressed assets.
The two-day AR Symposium will feature dozens of hedge fund managers, opening with a view from the top panel composed of hedge fund founders, who will discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the industry.
Strategy sessions will explore the future of macro investing, emerging markets, credit and managed futures.
On the second day of the event, six managers will take 15 minutes each to present their best ideas in equities, credit and other strategies, articulating their trades in great detail. This increasingly popular format will also allow the audience to question managers directly about the thinking that underpins their trades.
As in previous years, there will be networking opportunities during lunch breaks, lunch and cocktails.
