Despite tough markets, assets in alternative UCITS rise to $113 billion – latest survey shows

Last year was a tough year in financial markets – which was challenging for a young fledgling sector like the alternative UCITS industry.

Despite difficult markets global alternative UCITS assets under management in the sector increased by 25% from $90.5 billion in December 2010 to $113.3 billion the same point the following year.

From the midpoint of 2011 assets under management were at a high of $115.7 billion.  However, they then contracted by $2.4 billion, or 2%, by year end.

The second half of 2011 was characterised by problems surrounding the Eurozone crisis and the ensuing political, economic and financial problems which has weighed heavily in an already difficult year.

Some funds that were launched in 2011 closed a few months later and some larger funds haemorrhaged assets under management – a symptom of difficult markets.
