Distressed funds extend winning streak to nine months.

Hedge funds had a disappointing end to the first quarter with their first loss of the year, as the HedgeFund Intelligence Composite fell 0.10% in March. Major market indices posted small gains, with the MSCI World Index up 0.14% and the S&P 500 up 0.84%.

The Americas region was the only one that could boast positive performance, with the Absolute Return Composite climbing 0.24% in March. Regional counterparts in Europe and Asia suffered declines, as their respective indices fell 0.35% and 0.89%.

Distressed funds enjoyed their 9th consecutive month of gains, with a median return of 0.55% for March. Latin American equity funds were the best performers for the month so far, as the Absolute Return Latin American Equity Index returned 1.94%. Short of a reversal in performance as more funds report for the month, this would be the strategy's best monthly return since January 2013 when it rose 3.67%.
