Most Asian hedge fund start-ups have to cope with the lengthy, and frequently complicated, business of creating a new business from scratch. But, when Hamon Asset Management launched Hamon Oriental Long/Short Fund in April 2002, it had all the infrastructure, staffing and regulatory approval in place. Equally important, the Hong Kong-based firm had already been active in the Asian long-only markets since its creation in 1989 and had managed a long/short portfolio for a Swiss private bank since 1998.
