A market dominated by big players

Compared to other major hedge fund centres, the French industry is very dominated by a small number of major banking institutions whose involvement in the market accelerated in a serious way around 2000. According to research by Asterias, the top five houses account for 50% of total assets and at least two-thirds of all hedge fund activity. With their huge resources and marketing muscle, they have aggressively carved out stakes in all sectors of the industry. Their scope encompasses single manager vehicles, funds of hedge funds, structured products, dedicated portfolios and managed accounts platforms. But their ambitions have not been restricted to manufacturing products. They have also developed distribution capabilities, which are responsible for about 70% of the country's distribution network, and created a wide range of services, including prime brokerage and custody.
