Despite the obstacles, foreign firms are increasingly looking into the opportunities the Italian market has to offer

For non-Italian hedge fund managers and providers looking at their prospects in Italy, the domestic market may initially appear to be very daunting. The necessity and cost of creating an SGR, the challenge of accessing a distribution system dominated by the large banks, and complicated regulations restricting the ability of many retail and institutional investors to purchase hedge fund products, might easily send out a discouraging message. Yet, in true entrepreneurial spirit, increasing numbers of foreign firms are engaging with the Italian market and defying the barriers to entry. They have adopted a variety of approaches toward tackling these problems, and, in the process, many have carved out successful businesses.
