Institutional investors: Pension funds continue their global hedge fund shopping spree

Market volatility did little to hinder hedge fund mandates in 2007. Even as hedge fund failures and sub-prime contagion dominated the headlines, the number of converts to hedge funds continued to grow with many pension funds in the US and Europe either adding hedge funds for the first time, or expanding their exposure into alternative investments as a whole by making new strategic hedge fund plays.

Over the course of last year, InvestHedge tracked a total of 179 mandates that totalled more than $30 billion. While the figures seem to be in line with the industry estimates, a fair number of allocations have gone unreported – operating quietly behind the scenes – as allocations to the industry grew dramatically in terms of the number of hedge funds and the volume of assets.
