While both the EuroHedge and AsiaHedge surveys showed that
there had been a decline in the total number of new hedge funds
launched in those markets during 2007, it seems that there has
been not much change in the number of bigger new funds coming
through or in the aggregate assets they are raising.
In the US, given the long tail of difficult-to-verify
smaller funds (usually launched as private partnerships) our
approach has always been to try and identify only the larger
and more significant launches those funds of $50 million
and over for our regular new fund surveys. So, for the
purposes of this Global Review, we decided to compare like with
like and thus to compare the figures last year only for
the $50 million-plus new funds outside the US too.
