Funds of hedge funds: Starting to gather momentum

The French hedge fund market, while it has expanded in recent years, is smaller than it could be, according to the regulator. A new report recommends scrapping one of the most onerous requirements for funds of hedge funds, which could offer a needed boost

Although funds of hedge funds (FoHFs) – OPCVM de fonds alternatifs – have clearly spearheaded the expansion of the French hedge fund market in recent years, their growth since the passage of the regulatory framework in 2003 has not been enough to satisfy all market participants.

“Despite [their] sustained growth, the working group found that total assets managed by regulated alternative investment vehicles still accounted for a disappointing 1% or so of the total assets of AMF-authorised funds.” So said the AMF in its landmark report, On the assessment of the French regulatory framework for funds of hedge funds and on possible areas of improvement, published...
