Cevian takes activism forward

Cevian Capital of Stockholm holds the distinction of being the leading Scandinavian alternative investment firm to have made a significant impact outside the Nordic region. Founded by Swedish activist investors, Christer Gardell and Lars Forberg, in 2002, the two partners had previously managed a listed holding company, Custos, whose share price rose by 285% over the previous five years. But, driven by a plan to start a traditional alternative investment business, they launched Cevian Capital I, a private equity vehicle that was exclusively focused on the Nordic region. Following their success with Cevian I, Gardell and Forberg started a European activist event-driven fund, Cevian II, in July 2006, with a brief to extend Cevian’s skills set and experience to markets such as the German-speaking countries, which have a similar industrial structure to Sweden, or the UK, where the culture is conducive to Cevian’s activist style.
