Lombard Odier hedge fund unit builds momentum with flagship 1798 offering

Strong three-year growth of the Swiss private bank’s flagship fund has created a firm platform for the group to expand its alternatives business

Lombard Odier Investment Managers’ internal hedge fund operation has passed the three-year mark and continues to be in growth mode with its flagship 1798 Fundamental Strategies Fund.

The market-neutral multi-strategy fund, managed by LOIM’s chief investment officer for equities, Aziz Nahas, has now passed the $1 billion assets milestone and ended 2010 with a solid 8.7% return in a tricky and challenging year.

The fund invests primarily in equities and corporate credit across seven separate long/short equity books spanning global industrials, global healthcare, global technology, US financials, US consumers, emerging markets and European equities. Alongside these equity-focused strategies are three other strategies devoted to US events, convertible long/short and US special situations.

The composition of the fund is actively managed – with Nahas allocating money to, away from, his sub-teams based on the opportunity set for their strategy.
