Long-running Candela European long/short equity duo join Matrix hedge fund platform

The move to a more institutional environment gives a new lease on life for Barden and McCarthy’s 11-year-old Candela fund, with its proven track record for capital preservation and downside protection in times of equity market stress
The addition last year of the Candela long/short European equity fund by Matrix Asset Management, the investment management arm of the privately-owned £4 billion UK financial services group, marks a new departure for one of London’s longest-running long/short European equity partnerships.
Managers John Barden and Anthony McCarthy have worked together since the late 1990s – initially at AIG before starting Candela in 2000 – and have been in the investment industry since the late 1980s.
The Candela Fund, which was managed for 11 years by Olympus Capital and has a strong reputation for capital preservation and outperformance in difficult equity markets, has been renamed as the Matrix Pan-European Equity Fund following the acquisition of the business.
