Long-running Candela European long/short equity duo join Matrix hedge fund platform
Mon Feb 27, 2012
The move to a more institutional environment gives a new lease on life for Barden and McCarthy’s 11-year-old Candela fund, with its proven track record for capital preservation and downside protection in times of equity market stress
The addition last year of the Candela long/short European
equity fund by Matrix Asset Management, the investment
management arm of the privately-owned £4 billion UK
financial services group, marks a new departure for one of
London’s longest-running long/short European
Managers John Barden and Anthony McCarthy have worked
together since the late 1990s – initially at AIG
before starting Candela in 2000 – and have been in the
investment industry since the late 1980s.
The Candela Fund, which was managed for 11 years by Olympus
Capital and has a strong reputation for capital preservation
and outperformance in difficult equity markets, has been
renamed as the Matrix Pan-European Equity Fund following the
acquisition of the business.
As a result of the move, Matrix Alternative Asset Management
has become the new investment manager and has taken over
responsibility for all infrastructure relating to the fund
