Englander, Novick & Ruddock to keynote Absolute Return Symposium

The tumultuous market events of the past year should provide plenty of talking points for a cast of big-name speakers lining up to participate at this year's sixth annual Absolute Return Symposium. The event, to be held at 583 Park Avenue in New York on November 3 and 4, will once again bring together many leading managers and investors to exchange views on the important issues of the day.

The keynote speakers this year come from a variety of backgrounds and will offer myriad perspectives on the markets, the industry and the investment outlook. Israel Englander, the founder of Millennium Management, has some 35 years of experience in the securities and derivatives business and has been at the helm of one of the world's most consistently strong hedge fund performers over a prolonged period. Last year, Millennium International became the second fund to win Absolute Return's long-term performance award.

Barbara G. Novick, of BlackRock is vice chairman and senior advisor to the office of chairman, and  is a member of the Operating and Leadership Committees. From the inception of the firm in 1988 to 2008, Barbara headed the account management group and oversaw global business development, marketing and client service across equity, fixed income, liquidity, alternative investment and real estate products for institutional and individual investors and their intermediaries worldwide. The group's hedge fund footprint is growing even larger following its landmark acquisition of Barclays Global Investors in June.

Paul Ruddock, the co-founder of Lansdowne Partners in London, runs the biggest equity hedge fund manager in Europe, with about $14 billion of assets, including a substantial following among investors in the U.S.

A number of other top managers will also be participating on panel sessions over the two-day event. A panel debating global macro issues will feature Kyle Bass of Hayman Advisors, John Burbank of Passport Capital, Peter Thiel of Clarium Capital and Jim Melcher of Balestra Capital.

This year's quant session will feature Ross Garon of S.A.C. Capital Advisors, Roy Niederhoffer of R.G. Niederhoffer Capital Management and Michael Geismar of Quantitative Investment Management. The session will be moderated by top quant investor Rishi Narang of Telesis Capital.

As in previous years, there will be an array of strategy sessions, also including panels on equity, event-driven and distressed strategies. Industry issues will also get an airing, including such topics as investment terms and fees, and regulation.

The opening panel, which will take a broad look at at the state of the industry after last year's market crash and ensuing chaos, will feature  Eddie Fishman of D. E. Shaw, Frank Brosens of Taconic Capital Advisors and Geoffrey Sherry of Lucidus Capital Partners. Investors Mike Hennessy of Morgan Creek Capital Management and Mihir Meswani of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will participate in a panel on issues concerning investors.

We are delighted to have support in putting together this program from a top-level advisory board of leading names in the industry who have all spoken at this event in previous years, including three who will be speaking again this time—Frank Brosens, Mike Hennessy and  Marc Lasry of Avenue Capital. The other members of this year's advisory board are Joel Katzman, formerly of JPMorgan  Alternative Asset Management; Max Stone of D. E. Shaw, and Eric Vincent, president of Ospraie Management and chairman of the Managed Funds Association.

As in previous years, there will be ample time allocated for networking during coffee breaks, lunch and cocktails between or after the various sessions. In order to allow for more content in the program, we are for the first time this year planning to offer two parallel stream sessions—allowing us to drill down into more detailed topics that may not be of interest to all delegates but which may be of great interest to some. Details of those stream sessions will be announced later.
