New horizons in hedge fund investing
This year¹s InvestHedge Forum, on 21-22 September at the British Museum in London, promises top-level debate on the industry¹s most pressing themes.
With only two months to go before the event, plans are now getting close to completion for our annual InvestHedge Forum, to be held again in association with EuroHedge at its traditional venue the magnificent British Museum in London on 21-22 September.
Over the past month, a lengthening list of further top-quality speakers have been confirmed, representatives from an impressive number of important end-investor groups have registered to attend, and a number of further topics have been finalised.
Those recently added to the programme from the investor side include: Emily Porter-Lynch from the UK¹s Universities Superannuation Scheme; Kevin Arenson from Stenham Advisors; and Harold Yoon from SAIL Advisors. Those added from the manager side include: Simon Meadows from Lucidus Capital Partners, the Caxton credit trading offshoot which has just recently joined the billion dollar club; Joshua Greene from COMAC Capital, one of the strongest and most consistent performers in macro over recent years; and Adam Sorab from CQS Management, one of the most consistently successful players in convertibles and multi-strategy areas.
As usual with the InvestHedge Forum, investor issues will take centre stage at the British Museum including a keynote presentation from Orin Kramer of New Jersey State Investment Council, and a major opening panel session featuring key industry consultant Simon Ruddick of Albourne Partners to discuss the current issues for institutional investors when they are allocating to hedge funds.
The agenda has been designed to appeal to the key concerns of end-investors, and a significant number more than any previous year have already registered to attend, including representatives from pension funds such as Railpen, British Airways, DMGT and CPP Investment Board of Canada; insurance companies Scottish Widows, Travelers and Brit Insurance; and other major investment groups such as Grosvenor Estate.
Despite the industry¹s contraction during the recent financial crisis, a significant chunk of assets (around 40%) are still allocated via the fund of funds route so a number of top allocator groups are also featured on the programme. This year¹s fund of funds keynote will be from Kevin Gundle of Aurum Funds, and leading representatives from other InvestHedge award-winning groups also speaking this year include Joe Pignatelli of Archstone and Justin Sheperd of Aurora, as well as Raj Mehta from Persistent Edge, who are all travelling over from the US. They will be participating alongside top-performing European-based players such as Nigel Blanshard of Culross.
As always, there will also be a significant portion of the programme featuring the manager side of the business, with a keynote being given for the first time at this year¹s event by Stuart Roden, co-manager of the multi-award winning Lansdowne UK Equity fund. There will also be a major session to discuss the global macro picture which has been dominating the markets for all strategy areas in recent months featuring Tim Attias, one of the co-managers guiding Rubicon to impressive gains this year, as well as top managers from big institutional groups such as Dave Fishwick of M&G and David North of Legal & General.
Another panel featuring speakers from top management firms including Doug Shaw of BlackRock and John Demaine, formerly of BGI and now of James Caird will discuss together with Gihan Ismail of PiRho Consulting what really are the new Œinstitutional requirements¹ to win allocations.
Ever since the financial crisis, a major topic of debate at many events has been what the investors learned about the managers during the dark days following the Lehman collapse with many complaining bitterly about the suspension of redemptions, lock-ups, gates and so on. For this event, we plan to turn that question around and look at what the managers learned about the investors and how they behaved during the crisis. A panel including Mark Cecil from Jabre Capital Partners and Rahul Moodgal, formerly with TCI, will talk about the lessons they learned.
Finally, topics for the section of the programme during the first afternoon of the event where we offer a choice of parallel stream sessions are also now close to being finalised. They will include some further strategy-specific topics, such as currency trading, as well as important industry-wide issues such as regulation and of course major trends like the use of managed accounts and UCITS vehicles. As last year, the streams will be followed by an excellent networking opportunity during cocktails at the museum¹s 'Medieval Europe - The Paul and Jill Ruddock Gallery' and 'Clocks and Watches - The Sir Harry and Lady Djanogly Gallery'.
