Segantii Capital and Dalton Investments lead the winners at the 2012 AsiaHedge Awards

The Segantii Asia-Pacific Equity Multi-Strategy fund took the plaudits of over 250 leading managers and investors in the Asia-Pacific hedge fund industry last night, as it won the AsiaHedge Fund of the Year award for 2012 at a glittering industry dinner in Hong Kong.

The highly-coveted Management Firm of the Year award for 2012 went to Dalton Investments, a global firm founded by former Soros manager Jamie Rosenwald and  headquartered on the US west coast but focused largely on Asia.

Other US-based firms that won this year included Sensato, also based on the west coast, as well as Pine River and Alphadyne.

But there were as always many winners among funds managed within the region, including Apollo Asia – which is managed from Kuala Lumpur – as well as Tairen, Nezu, GCI, Simplex, Trafalgar Copley, and Segantii.

This year's Long Term Performance award, based on the best risk-adjusted returns over the past five years, went to Brevan Howard Asia, a macro fund which is also managed from Hong Kong.

Greenwoods Asset Management of Hong Kong was nominated in three categories, and this time took the only new award, instituted for best Emerging Manager & Smaller Fund.

This year's New Fund of the Year award was a very closely contested race between six funds that all had excellent performance since launching, but was narrowly won by Gordian Capital's Shin-Ka Fund, managed from Singapore.

As in previous years, the awards were based on risk-adjusted returns, using a quantitative methodology that takes account of both outright performance and how well managers do at managing market volatility.
