Launches & Closures

Shut downs exceed launches in Asia

At least 67 Asia-focused hedge funds shut down last year highlighting the tumultuous environment in the industry.

Based on AsiaHedge’s database, the number of closures and liquidations last year is much lower than in the recent years which could be due to the smaller universe of hedge funds in operation after the 2008 global financial crisis.

By comparison, a total of 149 funds closed in 2008, 103 in 2009 and 93 in 2010.

These figures are very much in line with the global historical average for the industry where about 10% of funds trading shut down each year.
