European shutdowns in 2009 reach 189 and still rising

At least 189 European hedge funds shut down in 2009, according to the latest information compiled by the EuroHedge data and research team, and the number is likely to rise further as additional closures are confirmed.

The figure is higher than in 2008 - when there were 173 shutdowns - and implies a higher attrition rate, given that the European hedge fund industry started 2009 with a smaller universe of funds than at the start of 2008.

Overall, the HedgeFund Intelligence data team has confirmed just over 450 hedge fund closures globally in 2009, following the tumultuous events of 2008
