Black Oak Capital has opened its doors and launched a hedge fund focused on the power market. The fund employs a long/short strategy and trades within the wholesale electricity market where large end-use consumers and other wholesale electricity buyers interact with merchant generators and integrated utilities. The principals of the fund are Thomas Jens, a former electricity trader at Allegheny Energy Global Markets, the wholesale trading unit of Allegheny Energy Supply, and Chad Kopp, a former equity analyst at value-oriented hedge fund, Searchlight Capital. Searchlight has about $110 million in assets under management.
