D.E. Shaw is venturing into qualitative long/short stock-picking with the hire of Brian Marshall, a former vice president and semiconductor analyst at Citadel Investment. Marshall started work at the $5 billion multi-strategy, quantitative trading firm run by David E. Shaw a couple of months ago, and has since been building a technology trading team.
Whether the firm plans eventually to launch a separate long/short technology fund is unclear; investors said it would be in keeping with Shaw's typical approach to first incubate the manager in its multi-strategy fund.
