Gabelli gives $1m for value-investor prize

Mario Gabelli and his fund shop recently committed as much as $1 million to endow an annual value-investor award for Columbia University. The award aims to recognize an investor who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of value investing, Gabelli's forte in both hedge funds and mutual funds run by his firm.

The first such award, the "Graham & Dodd, Murray, Greenwald Prize for Value Investing" was given in May to Joel Greenblatt, an adjunct professor at the university.

Greenblatt heads the New York-based hedge fund group Gotham Partners.
