Oil baron and hedge fund manager T. Boone Pickens was on hand for the season opener of San Diego's Del Mar race track. The head of Dallas-based BP Capital watched the ponies from the exclusive "director's club" vantage and placed bets on a horse named Global Trader. Pickens may be a better stock picker than gambler, as Global Trader snuck in a distant third in the race. But the company was good. The crowd included Ed McMahon as well as Warren Moon, who was inducted, a few days later, into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
