Soros gives $50m to fight African poverty

George Soros has donated $50 million to the Millennium Villages Project, an effort organized by Columbia University to fight disease and poverty in Africa. Columbia's Earth Institute set up the five-year initiative in 2005 to focus on the needs of rural villagers. Cash has already been earmarked for AIDS-prevention and antimalarial programs. The Soros funds will be used this year and next to establish operational centers in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania and Uganda.
